Why is explorer so unpopular?

Main Post:

Basically title, but what are everyone's thoughts as to why explorer is the least played format on arena? It's less expensive than timeless, true to paper, and will one day be pioneer.

Top Comment:

I think there are three reasons: Historic, being expensive and not being real Pioneer.

Historic was the first format on Arena to play with non-standard cards. But Historic has cards that are not legal on Pioneer / Explorer, and they matter enough to generate a completely different meta. At least on this subreddit a lot of people seem to really like Historic, and we can see this on the creation of Timeless: they thought it would be better to create a new format, to risk killing certain decks with the addition of cards like Ragavan, Blood Moon and Fetches. They even rebalanced Bowmasters and The One Ring to be much worse than their original versions.

The second, and this might apply to other formats, is that the entry barrier is really high because of lands. I started a few days before DMU, and it was really expensive to whenever I crafted a two color deck I had the need for the wildcards for shock lands, pathways, castles and manlands.

And the final reason is that it just is not Pioneer right now. I know people that dont play it for just this reason. We still have decks completely missing right now, and others with missing important cards.

I really like Explorer and it is my main constructed format. Historic seems to be combo fest, and Timeless is too expensive for me, and I have no interest on any deck atm. Explorer seems like that fine point: it's power level is clearly above Standard, but is not degenerate.

State of Explorer?

Main Post:

What is the current state of Explorer? I'm a newer player and i've only been worried about standard and draft. I want to branch out and try new formats but from what I understand, Historic and Alchemy is filled with yu-gi-oh tier combo decks that have the chance of winning on turn 3 and i'm not really into that. I don't hear people talk about explorer as much other than Greasefang being really strong, how is the state of it beyond greasefang? How crazy does it get?

There's an All Access event tomorrow (you can play any deck with any card you don't own without crafting them) which lasts for a couple of day, you can try that.

2021 Ford Explorer Limited 4WD

Main Post:

Hey everyone!

Does anyone own or previously owned this SUV. If so, can you please tell me how your experience has been and if you had a bad experience, what went wrong with it?

The best deal I could find in my area for this vehicle was $39,909 CAD or 29,642 USD and with 66,000 KM. The only thing I’m worried about is it’s history of being a rental car for a company. Took it for a test drive and worked great. Just brakes took a bit more to depress for a full stop than my current Honda CRV.

I’m trading it in because I need a car that works better for uphill rocky hills and mountainous terrain as I’m moving to a place with those kinds of conditions. I also needed more space it provides as I’m planning to have a 3rd child soon.

Does anyone have this exact model?

and if so, can you please tell me how your experience has been (good or bad reviews welcome please!!)

Also if you have any tips for negotiation let me know!!

Thanks

Explorer: What's Been Working for You and What Hasn't?

Main Post:

I currently play Izzet Curiosity. I really enjoy the deck but am struggling to get through Plat in BO1 (considering switching to BO3 after seeing some discourse). I feel like I pilot the deck pretty well, and win more often than lose, but then get on a crazy unlucky streak where I can't get to a Creativity no matter how much I dig. So I'm looking to diversify my deck portfolio.

I also have Rakdos Sacrifice, and most of Rakdos Midrange built too. I'm thinking of building Mono White Humans or maybe Angels, but most of the discussion around Explorer that I've seen is people recommending Greasefang or Rakdos. However, MTGAzone has Rakdos Midrange listed as a tier 2 deck for BO1 with a global winrare of 53% while Mono W Humans boasts 59%.

I'm mostly just looking to see some discussion on what has been working for people, what issues you encounter with your main deck(s), BO1 vs BO2 and things like that to help me decide what to build next. I have to be a little picky with my deck builds since I am low on wildcards.

Top Comment:

I really wouldn't worry too much about the tier placements, for larger formats it's more about how well you learn the deck and its matchups. If Rakdos looks fun to you, I think you'll do fine with it on the ladder.

Personally, I have Greasefang, Mono-G, Rakdos, and UW control decks built for Explorer, and have found all of them pretty solid. I struggle a bit when playing with Mono-red, but that could easily be a playstyle/deck experience issue.

Playing Explorer is misery

Main Post:

I play Explorer, because I don't have time to keep up with Standard. And after almost every session I wish I didn't open this game today. I built some decks, which can win, but only if I didn't see the same:

Greasefang, Fable, Invoke Despair, Angels, Atraxa

all day every day. It's impossible to adjust my decks to counter all of them. I even added the Fae of wishes where possible to have a sideboard for different situations, but that rarely helps against those OP cards, because it's too slow.

I just wonder, how people have fun playing the same "Top 5 best decks" they found on the internet over and over. "Hey, let me put that Parhelion 2 on turn 3 and get that much deserved win!". I thought unranked would be the place people experiment, but nope, it's the same.

I wish arena had some "jank" queue where people can actually see some ideas, get inspiration and have fun in general or get op cards banned in Explorer same as they did for Standard.

It sounds like you're expecting to come up with a deck that can provide a 100% win-rate against all other decks in the format. That is simply not possible. Whenever you optimize a deck to do good against certain archetypes, you're at the same time making it weaker against other archetypes.

My advice is that rather than focusing on what others are playing, you focus on what you like playing. Then it doesn't matter what your opponent brings to the table. Sometimes they will win, sometimes you will win.

I'm currently playing Izzet Creativity w/ Gearhulk, Magma Opus and Sublime Epiphany and I've been having a blast. Even for the matchups where I'm not favored in BO1 (since I only run sweepers on the SB), it's not a guaranteed loss, and it forces you to learn to avoid making misplays.
